about

In the late nineties I saw an episode of the old VH1 biography television show, Behind the Music. The episode’s subject was the Carpenters. At that point in my life, I didn’t share with very many people that some of the first records I fell in love with were by the Carpenters.

I often say now that Karen Carpenter was my first voice teacher, because I sang along with her so much. Those records are still apart of my DNA, but back then I’d spent so long being “cool” (and by the time I was a teenager, the Carpenters weren’t cool) that I’d forgotten what an influence they were on me.

As I watched the show, I reconnected to my early musical experience, and when the show ended I sat on the couch, stunned, thinking “She was only 32 when she passed, and I’m 32 right now.” It moved me.

Not long after, and still moved by the experience, I was writing with my friend Scott George, and he pretty much pulled this song out of me, but I never really performed it. I found it awhile back, reworked it a little, and took it to Ron Flynt at Jumping Dog Studio to work a little magic on it.

This is the first new music I had recorded in a number of years, and taking a different approach to it has opened up a floodgate of creativity and musical possibilities for me. So here’s my tribute to Karen. My first voice teacher. I hope you dig it…

lyrics

**GONE**

Why did you have to go?
Couldn’t you see how much more
There was to say?
Was it too late to turn it around?
Were you really so afraid?

I was a child by an open window
Singin the words to my favorite song
You helped me find my voice
Now yours is gone

Beguiling, dying, fading away
Just trying to gain control
Did you know we could hear your pain?
Not enough love to fill the hole

I was a child by an open window
Singin the words to my favorite song
You helped me find my voice
Now yours is gone

Too soon
You were sitting on top of the world
They long to be close to you
You were such a lonely girl

I was a child by an open window
Joyfully singing along
You helped me find my voice
Now yours is gone
